Eye Candy #206 - "300"
300: Look! It's the movie the Greek Tourism Bureau has been dreaming of! The most faithful comic book adaptation I've ever seen. Frank Miller's graphic novel is over-the-top, in-your-face, bloody, violent, fantastic, gaudy, stylized, and *NOT* historically accurate. It's not the point (nor is it really a valid criticism because "300" never sets itself as such; congratulations the historically inaccurate movie isn't historically accurate. HUGE surprise, lousy complaint). Miller's always been a fan of extolling the virtues of loyalty, freedom, sex, honor, violence for a cause, it's a recurring theme in most of his more recent work. Just look at the "Sin City" movies as further proof. "300" is just an all-out exercise in style over substance, eye candy versus deep thought, sex and violence, hooray. And that's fine - it does a great job at it, and it's perfectly in line with how Frank Miller envisioned it. A very entertaining film.
