Eye Candy #156 - "Quantum of Solace"
Quantum of Solace: I can see why even those who liked “Casino Royale” for its bare bones approach won’t go ga-ga over “QoS”: this may be the first time that a director has attempted to create Art out of a Bond film. The director, Mark Forster, is not known for his action set pieces, but rather his dramatic character studies like “Finding Neverland” and “Monster’s Ball”. But here, well, it’s just about the prettiest looking Bond film to date. Starting immediately after the end of “Casino”, Bond is about to revenge himself against the shadowy organization doing shadowy things, Quantum, which has a penchant for man-made environmental disasters. And, per the Craig version of Bond, we get heavy doses of brutal violence, beautiful cars having horrible things doing to them, and another helping of “This Ain‘t Your Father‘s Bond“ movie. I liked it. The danger with these films is that we always compare them with what has compare before (often unfairly so), and somehow even the lousy Bonds like “Moonraker” seem better in reflection. The sin of this movie is that the plot is complicated. Actually, it’s the most complicated, extended fistfight committed to film. It feels a lot like “The Bourne Ultimatum“ - running, jumping, shooting, wash, rinse, repeat. And I’m glad I’m apparently not the only person that thought that Olga Kurylenko was the only good thing in the recent pootastic “Hitman” movie, as she is the lead Bond lady here. That‘s an improvement. Woodchuck sez, “Check it out.”
