Eye Candy #152 - "The Monster Squad"

The Monster Squad: I hoped beyond hope, prayed, wished on a star, and thought only happy thoughts for many years for this to FINALLY come to DVD. I still don't understand the decision-making process of studios when it comes to releasing movies to DVD, but this seemed like a no-brainer, as it's still got a generation-whatever following (whatever generation I am, that is). The film has held up remarkably well: a group of school kids band together to fight Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon to prevent the end of the world in modern America suburbia. You know. Like we all have. We've got the movie buff kids, the fat kid, the "cool" kid, the bratty little sister, stereotypes abounding. The script (with some polish from Shane Black of "Lethal Weapon" and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" fame) is fun, harmless, with memorable lines, decent comedy, and some solid performances (Rudy is still my god, just as he was back in 1987). And it's got Stephen Fricking Macht! That's like having Bruce Fricking Greenwood in your movie! And Macht hasn't been in a good movie since! A great popcorn movie. Woodchuck sez, "Check it out!"
