Eye Candy #151 - "Rock and Rule"
Rock and Rule: I'll go ahead and say it: this is one of the greatest independent animated films of all time (up there with "The Secret of NIMH"), a post-apocalyptic rock opera about Mok, a rock star of epic proportions (think Elvis, throw in some Madonna, sprinkle liberally with Michael Jackson, and add a heavy dollop of David Bowie) who seeks the unique voice that will open a gateway to Hell and allow him to bring forth a demon under his control and so he can rule the world. He finds that voice in Angel, a young up and comer with her band of Omar, Dizzy, and Stretch. Hijinks ensue. For 1983, this was ahead of its time. A cartoon soundtrack featuring Cheap Trick, Lou Reed, Earth Wind and Fire, and more? And the songs are GOOD and SERVE THE PLOT? Look at the drivel that was streaming out of Disney concurrent to this movie ("The Great Mouse Detective", "The Black Cauldron", "Oliver and Company"), and this film was Neil Armstrong steps removed from it. THIS is a great movie. I'm glad that it's finally available on DVD.
