Eye Candy #125 - "Moon"

Moon: An austere sci-fi movie in the same vein as “Solaris” (both versions) and “2001“, with Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell, the sole occupant of a mining control station on the moon, responsible for managing various automated digging machines harvesting Helium-3 in the very near future. His sole companion is Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey), the computer system responsible for the running of the station and arguably the only “thing” who cares about Sam‘s well-being. Nearing the end of his three year contract and looking forward to return home to his wife and young daughter, he begins to start hallucinating and then realizes that all he know and understand may be wrong. Without giving too much of the plot away, Rockwell is pretty much the whole show here and he does well carrying it, with absolutely minimal supporting cast. The plot seems derivative (I guessed the big plot twist before it was revealed), but effectively drives home its themes of alienation, isolation, and identity. Like “Solaris”, this film isn’t for everyone (it‘s not a thriller, by any stretch of the imagination). You kinda have to be in the mood. Woodchuck sez, “Me likey.”
