Eye Candy #112 - "Quarantine"

Quarantine: An LA reporter on the night beat tags along with a fire crew to a domestic disturbance in an apartment building and soon finds herself in the midst outbreak of what appears to be a hyper form of rabies that presents in minutes rather than months. Soon she finds herself sealed in the building by the military with her cameraman, various first responders, and the residents as they are overcome by a virulent, violent plague that causes people to act like carnivorous raving creatures similar to the “zombies” in “28 Days Later”. Filmed in the first person perspective like “Cloverfield” (with a slightly less shaky hand), “Quarantine” is equal parts spooky and claustrophobic, with some brutal violence too (including a fall about 35 minutes into the film worth a rewind). I was surprised by the number of solid character actors in the film (particularly since this one isn’t anchored by a “star”), with Rade Serbedzija, Jay Hernandez, and Steve Harris. I know those names mean nothing to most of you, but you’d recognize their faces. And yes, it is another remake of a previous horror movie, a Spanish one called “REC” (for the love of Pete, thankfully it wasn’t yet another Asian remake), and the second film for director John Erick Dowdle, but I still liked it. Woodchuck sez, “Check it out.”
