Eye Candy #102 - "One Missed Call"

One Missed Call: Ah, another unsatisfying American remake of a Japanese "new horror" film, this time involving possessed cellphones that predict the deaths of their owners, as ghosts fight over the living. Beth Raymond (Shannyn Sossamon) has not one, not two, but FOUR friends die in the same suspicious manner (as in all of them dying under weird circumstances). All received voice messages of the moment of their death before they bite it, so Det. Jack Andrews (Edward Burns, who was in "Saving Private Ryan" for Pete's sake!) decides to help Beth figure out what the heckity-hoo is going on. And what's going on? Well, your standard Japanese ghost revenge trope filtered through an American sensibility, except it leaves a LOT to be desired in terms of exposition. There are some spooky images, but the sum is not anywhere near worth the parts. This is getting all together too old and derivative to be entertaining. Woodchuck sez, "Skip it."
