Eye Candy #2 - "Lake Mungo"
Lake Mungo: Low-budget Australian sci-fi/horror thriller (though not terribly “horrific” so much as a ghost story). Directed in a pseudo-documentary style about a young woman who dies in a drowning accident and begins to haunt her parent’s home, the story is told through interviews with the family (a la “Fourth Kind”, but more effective here as they don’t try and “recreate footage”) and footage obtained of the hauntings (lots of low-light, grainy footage to go around). Its main problem is that it’s so low-key, it has to work hard to generate thrills and chills. It feels a lot like a Discovery Channel special. I don’t know why they tried to market it as one of the “8 Films to Die For’, it’s not gory, not violent, there’s not even a scream in the whole picture. I’ve seen episodes of “Ghost Hunters” that weirded me out more. Still, I guess this is slated for an American remake and with a little polish, this could be like “Paranormal Activity“. Not complete hooey, but certainly not all it could be and straight horror fans will probably hate it. Woodchuck sez, “Wasted potential.”
