Eye Candy #223 - "Fido"

Fido: 4-stars is probably a little too high. I would have settled for 3.5 for "Fido". The story of a boy and his zombie (a more heart-warming combination you will never find) and what happens when a desire to eat brains meshes with surburbia. Welcome to an alternate reality where zombies attacked after World War 2, and humanity now finds itself in safe zones administered by Zom-Com, the conglomerate responsible for maintaining peace, order, and zombie killing. Other than that, though, it's a lot like "Leave It To Beaver". Timmy Robinson, in a bout of his parents keeping up with the joneses, buy their own "tame" zombie to use as a servant. Timmy quickly develops a rapport with the monster and names him "Fido" (played by Billy Connolly). And Fido isn't too happy with letting the neighbors and local bullies pick on Timmy, so as the bodies start piling up, the dead....WILL WALK (sorry, had to get melodramatic there). So it's up to Timmy and his parents to cover Fido's tracks so the government doesn't take Fido away. This movie is fun for what it is. The cast is obviously having a good time, the young actor playing Timmy is spot on (including the "Timmy's in Danger"/Lassie homage), and Connolly gives Fido a ton of personality without uttering a single intelligible line. It's a little bit gory (because you can't have a zombie movie without arterial spray), but not so much as to be overwhelming. As a send-up of zombie movies, it works. Woodchuck sez, "Me Likey".
