Eye Candy #120 - "Black Dynamite"
Black Dynamite: Just from the previews, I knew I had to see this movie. A riotous spoof of blaxsploitation movies, this may be (arguably) the greatest spoof movie since “Airplane!”. I‘m serious. Its attention to detail in duplicating the look, quality, music, and sound of those movies is SUPERB. It one-ups “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka”, even while retreading some of the same ground. Michael Jai White is Black Dynamite, inner city hero, former secret agent, and martial artist, who is called back to duty when his younger brother, working for the CIA, is killed by shadowy men with shadowy plans. Rounding a group of like-minded inner city personalities, like Bullhorn, Saheed, and Cream Corn, they move Shaft-like with guns and afros to take the power back and fight the evil mastermind behind the conspiracy to keep the Black Man down. With a devotion to style that is almost fanatic yet at the same time extremely kitschy, we get a goofy, kinetic comedy that provides lots of good belly laughs with an outlandish plot that doesn‘t forget the kitchen sink. Packed with B and C-level African American actors like Tommy Davidson, Mykelti Williamson, Bokeem Woodbine, and Arsenio Hall, this film is immensely watchable…even all the way to Kung Fu Island. Woodchuck sez, “You gotta check this out.”
