Eye Candy #110 - "Wanted"
Wanted: I’m one of those folks that actually read the “source material” for this film when it was originally published in comic book form (which was about a world full of super villains who had killed off all the superheroes, so it was villains against villains, with superpowers and all that general silliness). However, this film is VERY far removed from that. In fact, with the exception of some names, the title, and use of the word ‘assassin’, it is literally almost an entirely different story. So fans of the comic beware - temper your expectations. “Very loosely based” doesn’t begin to describe it. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is a cube rat in a dead-end job suffering from anxiety attacks. One encounter with a beautiful woman (Fox, played by a skeletal looking Angelina Jolie) later, and he finds himself in the company of The Fraternity, an almost supernatural group of assassins who take their target cues from a loom that communicates their next targets by binary code, led by Sloan (Morgan Freeman). Gibson is groomed to fight Cross (Thomas Kretchmann), a rogue member of the Fraternity who is killing members, as apparently Gibson is the son of one of the greatest assassins that has ever lived. Brutal violence ensues. Lots of it. Bending bullets, beatings, and exploding heads shown in detail. This movie is fine for what it is. Is it a great movie? No. Is it a real adaptation of “Wanted”? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Knowing that going in, will probably increase your enjoyment. Woodchuck sez, “Fine for what it is.”
