Eye Candy #106 - "Premonition"
Premonition: First things first - what happens in this film completely violates the meaning of the word ‘premonition’ (which is the ability to see/forecast future events). What we really have is more of a time travel hybrid and now I‘m about to SPOIL the heck out of this so it makes sense. Linda and Jim Hanson (Sandra Bullock and Julian McMahon) are a couple on the rocks, until one afternoon Linda is in informed that Jim has been killed in a car accident. The next morning she wakes up, and Jim is alive again and she repeats many of the motions from the previous day. And the next day, she wakes up and Jim is dead, and one of her daughters is horribly scarred. And the next day she wakes up, Jim is alive again and her daughter is fine. So she realizes that events are leading up to the estrangement and death of her husband so she takes action to prevent it from happening. Linda, instead of forecasting strange events, is actually experiencing her life out of order (in particular, seven days in which her her daughter is injured, her husband is in a car accident, the funeral for her husband, and her subsequent committal to the loony bin). Why and how this is happening to Linda is NEVER EXPLAINED in the film, nor the relevance of her life playing out of order (I.e. is Linda supposed to do something with the information she has). The real order is something closer to Thurs., Mon., Sat., Tues., Fri., Sun., Wed. It helps knowing that going in, otherwise it makes no sense. While Bullock gives a good performance, this film is needlessly and pointlessly confusing. I couldn’t have made it through without help. Woodchuck sez, “Skip it.”
