Eye Candy #269 - "Fanboys"
Fanboys: This film had a theatrical release of about 5 minutes, which is unfortunate because it certainly deserved to be in theaters longer than any of the “______ Movie(s)”. Essentially a giant in-joke for “Star Wars” fans, about the rabid fandom that has grown up around the property and specifically around the impending release of “Phantom Menace” back in 1999, the story involves four friends who take a cross-country trip to break into Skywalker Ranch to steal a rough cut of the 1999 movie. Along the way, they get drunk, get high, endure many celebrity cameos, run afoul of Trekkies in the birthplace of James T. Kirk, receive clandestine help from William Shatner himself, run afoul of some Vegas prostitutes and their pimp, dance delicately around pedophilia, and strip at a gay biker bar called “The Mantina”. Some good laughs here, and not nearly as raunchy as I was expecting it to be (and when it is raunchy, it’s also doofy, like an Ewok humping a guy’s leg). The cast is uniformly good with no particular standouts. “Star Wars” fans will probably love it. People who have never seen “Star Wars” won’t get the joke. Woodchuck sez, “Worth a look.”
