Eye Candy #252 - "Babylon AD"

Step Brothers:  Don’t get me wrong, this film is about as crude as crude can be and cut directly from the standard Will Ferrell comedy formula that’s served him since “Old School” (i.e. Ferrell plays an idiot), but darn it if this movie didn’t make me smile, and moreso than I expected to.  Granted, there doesn’t appear to be a script, just them throwing lines at one another with the apparent goal of making the other crack up on camera.  Brennan (Ferrell) and Dale (John C. Reilly) play two middle-aged men who become stepbrothers when their single parents marry.   Brennan is 39 and Dale is 40, neither has a job and both live at home.  After some initial hostility, they discover that they are indeed best friends.  Unfortunately their antics drive their newly married parents apart, so Dale and Brennan work out a plan to get them back together.  So it’s like “The Parent Trap” WITHOUT Hayley Mills but WITH a lot of fart jokes and toilet humor.  And while I found Ferrell and Reilly amusing, the real standout in the cast was character actor Richard Jenkins as Dale’s father (Brennan’s you get the point), who is laugh-out-loud funny.  It’s not a great Ferrell movie, it’s not even a really good one, but it’s watchable and will kill the requisite 98 minutes of running time in your life.  Ah hell, who am I kidding, I’ll probably buy it.  Woodchuck sez, “Worth a look.”
